Sex Toy Advice: Can Dildos Stretch The Vagina?

Sex Toy Advice: Can Dildos Stretch The Vagina?
Hey Sh!

You probably cannot answer this, but I thought I would ask. I have used a Cupid 6 dildo and rabbit vibrator and I have been using them for vaginismus for nearly a year. But with the dildo, I am worried this has stretched my vagina too much as when I last had sex at the end of last year, I didn't feel as tight as I used to.

Also when I now use the Sh! Waterproof Rabbit Vibrator, I don't need to use lube when inserting and I can easily insert while not being turned on or aroused. Have I taken things go far and lost vaginal tightness which makes orgasms more fun for both me and a male partner?

I only ask this as sometimes when I need to pee, I have had instances where a little wee comes out and that's never happened before. And I also struggle sometimes to hold my bladder when I really need to go. Could the Cupid 6 Curved Dildo stretch my vagina too much or cause a tear or an issue? Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Many thanks for your email :)

First, we want to acknowledge the incredible progress you've made with your vaginismus journey – using the Cupid 6 silicone dildo is a huge achievement! Cupid 6 is one of our larger toys, so being able to enjoy it comfortably shows just how much your pelvic floor has relaxed :)

Can Dildos Stretch The Vagina?

The answer to this question is both yes and no. It depends on how the dildo is used, and what the end goal is.

It is possible to use a dildo to stretch the vagina over time. This type of dilation may be necessary for someone who has undergone treatments for cancer, for example, or after vaginoplasty (when a vagina is created). This deliberate stretching is different from using a dildo or vibrator for occasional pleasure.

In your case, being able to accommodate a large dildo means that your body is beginning to feel more at ease with penetration, and your mind is ready to embrace it without that instinct to protect you. The silicone dildo and rabbit vibrator have helped your pelvic floor relax - which was the goal of your dilation.

Did Sex Toys Cause My Vagina To Become Loose?

The vagina is an incredibly resilient and elastic canal, not an open tube as many might imagine. The vagina is truly amazing - it can stretch to bring a baby into the world! So rest assured, a sex toy about two fingers in width is highly unlikely to cause any harm when used correctly.

Right now, your vagina is learning to welcome pleasurable penetration. This will feel different compared to the tightness of vaginismus, but it is normal. The vagina should open up and become more roomy during sex. Your body is simply responding in the way it should.

Can I Use Sex Toys Without Lube?

While we always recommend using lube for enhanced sensuality and comfort, it’s possible to insert a sex toy or penis into a vagina without it. Many women & vulva owners naturally produce enough moisture for pain-free penetration. Many only start using lube when their natural lubrication decreases, which makes penetration less comfortable or even painful.

The Sh! Rabbit Vibrator is made from TPR, a semi-porous material. TPR soaks up some of your natural moisture, so if you're able to insert the vibrator without extra lube, your body is producing plenty of natural wetness. Again, this is normal. If there was no natural wetness, you wouldn't be able to insert the vibe without pain.

Did A Dildo Cause Me To Leak Pee?

As we age, the pelvic floor loses some of its elasticity. You might notice small urine leaks when you sneeze, laugh, cough, or run. This is a normal part of the ageing process and is not caused by using sex toys.

We completely understand how frustrating, inconvenient, and even embarrassing this can be - we’ve been there too. Typically, kegel exercises help strengthen the pelvic floor and reduce leaks, but in your case, we want to advice caution. Since tightening exercises could trigger your vaginismus, we recommend reaching out to the doctor, therapist, or pelvic floor specialist who helped with your treatment. They’ll be able to guide you in a way that supports both your pelvic health and your comfort.

We hope this helps put your mind at ease - please let us know how you get on :)

Best Wishes,
Team Sh! xx
