Menstrual Cups FAQ's

A menstrual cup is a small, soft cup that collects period blood. The cups we stock at Sh! are made from silicone, 100% body-safe material.

A menstrual cup is inserted into the vagina, where it collects period blood. It doesn't need to be changed as often as a tampon or pad.

In our minds, there are only pros to using menstrual cups:
- Menstrual cups may seem like a pricey investment, but will last years, so you'll save money.
- Cups don’t absorb natural secretions or deposit fibres.
- Cup holds up to three times as much blood as a pad or tampon.
- Menstrual cups are comfortable, and you can play sports, sleep, swim and travel whilst wearing one.
-Eco-friendly. Using a cup ensures you don't add to landfill.

Menstrual cups are far safer than tampons. We are not going to lie; period cups can be messy until you get the hang of them. Once you can confidently insert, remove and empty your cup, they are not messy.

During your period, remove and empty the cup as needed (every 4-8 hours) before rinsing it and inserting again. Once your period has finished, you'll need to give your menstrual cup a deeper clean - soak in sterilizing solution (used to clean baby bottles) or boil in pan of water for 3-5 minutes. Leave cup to air dry before storing in its storage bag.

Q&A: Why am I so horny during my period?

I feel like I get really horny during my period. I worry about having sex because of the mess but it’s so frustrating because it just feels like the time I am most turned on. Is this normal? Surely that’s the time you should feel least aroused? What’s the deal? J

Hi J,

Many thanks for your email.

Good news – it’s perfectly normal to feel extra frisky just before or during your period. Levels of the hormone progesterone are at their lowest during that time of the month. This means that your levels of horniness equal that of a teenage boy!

Also, as the body retains more water just before your period, you may feel extra pressure from the bladder on the G-spot. This could translate to feelings of increased arousal and pelvic heaviness. For many, this means easier orgasms. A definite win, we’re sure you’ll agree!

PERIOD SEX TIPS

- Find out if partner/s enjoy your period – some people really get off on period sex. Your period could be an unexpected bonus!

- Using soft sponge tamponsduring sex takes care of any unwanted drippage. The sponge sits at the top of the vaginal canal, soaking up any blood and is so soft it won’t be felt during penetrative sex.

- Pop a towel under you – this trick is great for days with low flow.

- Have sex in the shower. Let the water wash away the blood whilst you concentrate on having fun!
