Q&A: Using A Strap-On Is Harder Than Expected!

Q&A: Using A Strap-On Is Hard! - Sh! Women's Store

'Dear Sh! Team,

My partner and I recently purchased the starter strap-on kit, and unfortunately, we’re quite disappointed with the product.

First, the dildo itself didn’t meet our expectations. It doesn’t feel very natural or lifelike, and we both found the overall toy aspect of it a bit off-putting. It was also much harder to use than we anticipated, and it didn’t work the way we imagined or hoped. We are both quite new to sex toys and we thought an all-in-one kit would be easy. Additionally, both of us developed cystitis, which has made the experience even more frustrating.

We were really excited to try something new, but this just didn’t live up to our expectations. Could you please advise us on the next steps or suggest any alternatives that might work better for us?

Best regards, C & B'

Dear C & B,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We value input from our customers and are sorry to hear that the strap-on kit didn’t meet your expectations.

While our silicone dildos are 100% body-safe (hypoallergenic and non-porous), we understand that everyone has different preferences when it comes to toys. We're sorry to hear the product didn’t work as you and your partner had hoped.

We also noted your comments about being relatively new to using sex toys. This can sometimes make getting started a bit tricky, especially with products like strap-ons. Strap-ons can take a bit of practice to get right, especially as the giver can't feel through the dildo as one would through a penis.

It’s unfortunate to hear that both you and your partner developed cystitis. We understand how uncomfortable and frustrating that can be. Cystitis is often the result of a bacterial infection but can also be triggered by increased friction during sex - whether with or without toys - earning it the nickname "honeymoon cystitis."

To minimize friction and reduce the risk of irritation, it’s essential to use a generous amount of lubricant on both the toy and the body. The water-based lube included in your kit is specifically designed to help with this. Additionally, keeping sex toys clean is crucial. We recommend using the anti-bacterial cleaning spray included in the kit both before and after use, and anytime the dildo is shared between partners during play.

Here are some tips to help you get the most pleasure out of your strap-on:

Choose the Right Strap-On

Harness: Make sure the harness fits securely and comfortably. Adjustable straps are ideal to get a snug fit without being too tight.

Dildo: Start with a size and shape that feels non-intimidating and comfortable for both partners. Some couples prefer a smaller or more realistic dildo to ease into the experience.

Communicate Openly

Before, during, and after, talk to your partner about what feels good, any discomfort, or adjustments needed. Communication is key to making the experience enjoyable for both partners.

Start Slowly

If you are new to using a strap-on, take it slow. This helps both partners get used to the sensations and mechanics. Don't rush; ease into it at a pace that feels right.

Use Plenty of Lube

Apply a generous amount of water-based lube to both the dildo and your partner's body to reduce friction and enhance pleasure. This is especially important for comfort and safety.

Positioning Matters

Experiment with different positions to find what works best. Common positions like missionary, doggy-style, or spooning can be great starting points. Make sure both partners feel comfortable with the angle and penetration depth.

Play with Other Sensations

Incorporate other forms of touch and stimulation. The partner wearing the strap-on can stimulate their partner's erogenous zones using hands or other toys, enhancing the overall experience.

Practice and Patience

Using a strap-on can take some practice to master the coordination and rhythm. Be patient with each other and take breaks if needed. It's okay to laugh and have fun during the learning process (you should definitely laugh and have fun!).

Switch Roles

If both partners are open to it, try switching roles. This can bring new dynamics to the experience and allow both partners to explore different sensations.

Hygiene is Crucial

Always clean the dildo before and after each use with a dedicated toy cleaner or antibacterial soap and warm water. This helps prevent infections like cystitis. Using condoms over the dildo, especially if switching between partners, can add another layer of hygiene and make cleanup easier.

Adjust for Comfort

Pay attention to comfort for both the wearer and the receiver. Adjust the harness or change positions if either partner is experiencing discomfort.

By taking your time, using plenty of lube, and keeping communication open, you’ll create a pleasurable and exciting experience for both you and your partner.

We hope this advice is helpful in enhancing your experience.

Best Wishes,
Team Sh! xx
