Silicone Lube FAQ's

Silicone-based lube is super-slippy and long-lasting - a few drops go a long way! It's a great option for anal play and fun in a shower or bath ( be careful - can also make baths & shower surfaces slippery!)

Silicone lube doesn't contain water and is not water-soluble, so it has more staying-power than water-based lube. Silicone lube is generally more expensive and may not be best for sensitive vaginas..

No. Don't use silicone lube with silicone sex toys. The two silicones can react together, and over time damage the surface of your silicone toy.

Yes, most silicone lubes will mark fabric. You can treat it as you would an oily stain, but the easiest way to avoid staining is to put down a sex towel!

YES. Check the bottle for expiry date and shelf life (how long to use, once opened - usually 12 months). If unsure, check colour, scent or texture - if changed, time to order a new bottle.

Silicone lube can cause thrush or a UTI in sensitive vaginas.

Silicone-based lube isn't water soluble; you need to wash it off with soap, which is never a good idea as soap unbalances the delicate pH of the vagina. Left inside, the molecules of the silicone lube cling to the vaginal walls, trapping bacteria. This can cause infection. Similarly, bacteria can cause a UTI when they reach your urethra. If you get recurrent bouts of thrush or UTI, try organic water-based lube instead. And remember to always pee after sex!

Yes. In fact, most condoms are lubricated with silicone lube.

silicone lube lowdown

Silicone (sometimes spelled silicon) lubricant is very long lasting and doesn't dry out - there's none of the gloopyness or sticky residue that you can get with some water-based lube.

Silicone lube feels like light baby oil* but with one difference; is is safe to use with condoms.

(*BTW, never raid your bathroom cabinet for added lubrication - many products contain mineral-based oil which will upset the delicate balance of the vagina)

A little goes a long way; a few drops is all you need, which is why silicone is a good lube-choice when super lubrication is required: anal sex, shower/bath/jacuzzi sex (although the oiliness of silicone can make surfaces slippery,  so be careful not to slip!) and marathon sex sessions...
