GOOD TO KNOW
Silicone Lube Questions, Answered
What people ask about silicone personal lubricants.
Does silicone lubricant expire?
Yes. Like all personal lubricants, silicone lube has a shelf life. Check both the expiry date and the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol on the bottle, which tells you how long it's best to use the product once opened (often 12 months, but always follow the manufacturer's instructions).
If the lube has changed colour, smell or texture, or the bottle is damaged, it's time to replace it.
Store your silicone lube in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly closed, and it'll be ready whenever you are.
Can silicone lubricant cause thrush, BV or UTIs?
Most people use silicone lubricant without any problems. However, because it isn't water-soluble, it doesn't rinse away as easily as water-based lubricant. Some people find they need soap to remove it completely, but soap can upset the vagina's natural pH balance. If silicone lubricant remains in the vagina, it may also trap bacteria against the vaginal walls.
If you're prone to thrush, BV or recurrent UTIs, you may find a quality water-based lubricant suits you better. Every body is different, so start with a small amount and see how your body responds.
And one final Sh! tip: always pee after sex -it's one of the simplest ways to help reduce the risk of a UTI.
Will silicone lubricant stain my sheets?
It can. Silicone lubricant is more resistant to washing than water-based lubricant and may leave marks on some fabrics. If you're worried about bedding, place a towel underneath or choose older sheets for particularly slippery adventures.
Is silicone lubricant good for shower sex?
Yes. Silicone lubricant is waterproof, so it won't wash away under running water like water-based lubricant. It's perfect for shower, bath and hot tub play. Just remember it can make surfaces slippery, so take extra care getting in and out.
Is silicone lubricant good for anal sex?
Absolutely. Because the anus doesn't produce its own lubrication, silicone lubricant's long-lasting glide can make anal play much more comfortable. Apply generously, reapply if needed and never push through pain.
Is silicone lubricant safe for vaginal use?
Many people use silicone lubricant vaginally without any problems, and its silky feel and long-lasting glide make it a popular choice. However, every vagina is different. If you're prone to BV, irritation or recurrent infections, try a small amount first and see how your body responds. If it doesn't suit you, switch to a quality water-based lubricant.
Can you use silicone lubricant with silicone sex toys?
We recommend using water-based lubricant with silicone sex toys. While some silicone lubricants may not cause any problems, others can react with the toy's surface over time. We've even tested this ourselves. Why take the risk with an expensive toy when water-based lubricant works beautifully and is much cheaper to replace?
Can you use silicone lubricant with condoms?
Yes. Silicone lubricant is compatible with latex, polyisoprene and polyurethane condoms, making it a great choice for safer sex. Just avoid oil-based products with latex condoms.
What's the difference between silicone lubricant and water-based lubricant?
Water-based lubricant feels lighter, washes away easily and is compatible with all sex toys, making it the most versatile everyday choice. Silicone lubricant lasts much longer, doesn't evaporate or rinse away in water and is often preferred for anal play and shower sex. We recommend water-based lubricant with silicone toys, and silicone lubricant when you want maximum staying power.
What is silicone lubricant?
Silicone lubricant is a long-lasting personal lubricant made from silicone rather than water. It's exceptionally slippery, doesn't dry out quickly and won't wash away in water, making it ideal for anal play, shower sex, massage and longer sessions. Just remember: if you're using silicone sex toys, we recommend pairing them with a water-based lubricant instead.
Why use silicone lubricant?
Silicone lubricant stays slippery far longer than water-based lubricant, so you need less and rarely need to reapply. It's waterproof, silky-smooth and perfect when you want glide that lasts, especially for anal play, shower sex, massage or extended pleasure sessions.
