The Great Wall of Vulva: Smashing Stigma with Sculpture
For centuries, female genitalia have been surrounded by mystery, fascination, shame or confusion. But in 2006, British artist Jamie McCartney set out to change that by celebrating the real, diverse beauty of vulvas on a monumental scale.
The Great Wall of Vulva is an 8-metre-long wall sculpture featuring 400 unique plaster casts of vulvae arranged into ten striking panels. It is a powerful reminder that there is no one way for a vulva to look, and that every single one is completely normal.
Participants ranged in age from 18 to 76 and included mothers and daughters, identical twins, trans women and men, pre- and post-natal women, and before and after labiaplasty.
This artwork has been featured in sex education and body image workshops. Doctors use it to reassure patients, and educators (like us) use it to start conversations.
Jamie McCartney has teamed up with a professor of evolutionary biology on a groundbreaking study exploring internal vaginal anatomy. Using a process he developed with medical experts, Jamie created the world’s first continuous internal-to-external vaginal casts, made with safe dental-grade materials and cast in lead crystal glass. Like his Great Wall of Vulva, these sculptures challenge shame, celebrate diversity, and make the invisible visible. They reveal the incredible variation inside our bodies and confront harmful myths about too loose" or "too small" vaginas - reminding us that, when it comes to anatomy, one size never fits all.
