We were recently contacted by theatre maker and spoken word artist Lorna Meehan, who is looking to speak to women about their experiences of living with Vaginismus. The conversations will form a part of a performance that will help raise awareness of this condition. Lorna explains more below:
"Would you like to contribute to my performance project about Female Sexuality and Sexual Dysfunction?
I'm a Birmingham based theatre maker/spoken word artist who recently realised I have Vaginismus (a common problem where your vagina basically has a panic attack in response to penetration). I was relieved to find I had an actual condition but angry at the silence and shame surrounding it, so I wanted to channel that into something positive by writing a show about it!
My show is called 'No Entry' an will be an autobiographical/verbatim show about dysfunctional vaginas, the big deal with virginity and how the myths about sex that we take as truth can seriously hinder our general well-being.
It will be a shamelessly candid and heart wrenchingly hilarious discussion about female sexual shame and the distorted perception of perpetual singledom, using true stories from women of all ages.
Would you like to contribute to the project by sharing your experiences around these issues? I'm particularly eager to hear from anyone with Vaginismus, as naturally I'm finding it difficult to find people who are up for talking about it, which is a big reason I want to create a space where they can.
If you're interested, please email me at lorna_meehan@yahoo.co.uk and I will send you some questions. You can send your answers anonymously by post if you would rather, either way, confidentially is assured. I look forward to hearing from you.
